MDCalc is quick access to all those medical calculations that are too painful to memorize, and too useful to ignore. After wasting time hunting through Google results to find the equations I needed, I created this site as a respository.

Surveys of our own medical students show that they like the internal medicine clerkship, they feel they learn a lot, they respect the faculty, but most of them don’t want to become internists. Typical reasons involve the lifestyle (too many hours and too unpredictable), the pay (not enough), and a perception that the field is overwhelmingly complex.

Our residents usually seem bored to tears with our introductory explanations of coding. That’s why I was delighted when a recent graduate called about a year ago to tell us that his fellowship program faculty were impressed with his coding acumen–and that they wanted him to teach the rest of the fellows! Nonetheless, I believe that we tend to make the subject much too dry and complicated. My name is David Theige, MD. I am an internal medicine physician at MeritCare Health System in Fargo, ND. I am also the program director of the University of North Dakota Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Years ago, I started MedEd News, possibly the first medical weblog. I’ve been away from blogs for a few years, but I plan to experiment here. My hope is to develop something that will be of use to our residents.

This site is named after Sir William Osler, “the Father of American Medicine.”
